Lewmar Anchor Windlass

Full review

The Lewmar anchor windlass stands as one of the most trusted names in ground tackle handling for boaters who demand reliability when it matters most. Engineered for both sail and power vessels, this windlass combines marine-grade bronze, stainless steel, and anodized aluminum components to withstand the punishing conditions of saltwater exposure, UV radiation, and constant mechanical stress. Whether you opt for a vertical or horizontal model, the Lewmar design philosophy centers on compact, low-profile housing that integrates cleanly into bow configurations without sacrificing holding power or chain-handling capacity. Models like the Pro-Series, Horizon, and Highfield lines cater to different vessel sizes, from weekend cruisers to larger offshore yachts, ensuring that anchor retrieval and deployment become effortless rather than a wrestling match with rope and rode.

At the heart of every Lewmar windlass is a robust motor paired with a precision-engineered gearbox, delivering consistent pulling power even when hauling heavy chain rodes from significant depths. The gypsy, custom-matched to your specific chain size and anchor rode combination, ensures smooth feeding without slippage or jamming, a detail that separates Lewmar from lesser windlass systems prone to chain fouling. Many models feature dual-direction operation, allowing both retrieval and controlled anchor lowering through deck-mounted or remote switch controls, often paired with a wireless handheld remote for added convenience when working solo. Sealed electrical connections and corrosion-resistant housings mean the unit continues performing reliably season after season, even in demanding saltwater environments where lesser equipment quickly succumbs to rust and electrical failure.

Installation flexibility makes the Lewmar anchor windlass a favorite among boat owners upgrading aging ground tackle systems or outfitting new vessels from scratch. The company provides detailed sizing charts correlating windlass models to boat length, displacement, and anchor rode specifications, helping buyers select the appropriate pulling capacity rather than guessing. Accessories such as control panels, circuit breakers, and chain pipes are designed to integrate seamlessly, reducing installation complexity for both professional riggers and capable DIY boat owners. Beyond raw functionality, Lewmar's reputation for after-sales support and widely available replacement parts means long-term ownership remains hassle-free, cementing this windlass as a dependable investment for anyone serious about safe, efficient anchoring on the water.
